About SaS

Superheroes Against Superbugs (SaS) is an initiative launched in 2018 with support from the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance and with the aim to build a community dedicated to tackle the growing threat of antibiotic resistant-infections in India. SaS programmes aim to engage with the general public to raise public awareness and improve public understanding of this global threat to build a society of smart antibiotic users. Learn More about the initiative and the problem of superbugs.

SaS is a novel and unique effort where school children have been made creative partners in the fight against this century’s biggest health threat. We combined innovative science education and public engagement approaches to ensure that the project not only empowers young children with scientific knowledge but equips them with tools to use this knowledge to promote awareness and action in their sphere of influence. “The content for the Superheroes against Superbugs workshop is very useful and has been intelligently planned to convey the right set of messages to school students. The activities are arranged in increasing order of complexity so that the students are primed and equipped to understand what is coming up next. Also, because the hands-on activities are fun-filled and engaging, they keep the students from getting lost or bored, while effectively translating the information across.” – V Devi Prasad, PhD student, Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology. Three PhD students from CCMB recently adopted our educational resources for a workshop with school children in Hyderabad.

“I showed the comic to my neighbour and they not only appreciated the artist in me but also the good message that was being passed. I have told all my relatives on the advantages and disadvantages of using antibiotics”  Richisha Gupta, Global Edge School, Madhapur Campus, Hyderabad

“I strongly felt the need to educate the general public about the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and came across Superheroes against Superbugs (SaS) program. This is a wonderful and unique initiative with well-designed contents that are interactive and fun-filled. Handson activities are integral part of this workshop, to enable students internalise the depth of the issue. I enjoy conducting this workshop and encourage students to design comics and role plays that give them an opportunity to express their understanding in a creative, yet powerful way.” Dr. Sathya Srinivasachari, Science Educator, Poorna Learning Center, Bengaluru who used SaS resources to conduct workshops in Bengaluru

The pilot has been possible due to financial support from DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance and successful partnerships with World Comics India (for Grassroots comics), Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad (scientific partner) and The George Institute for Global Health, New Delhi (evaluation partner).
